Meet the Team: Meet Mark, our newest Trustee

30 October 2024

To celebrate Trustee Week 2024, 4th – 8th November, we wanted to thank our brilliant our board of trustees for the wealth of experience they bring to our organisation, as well as the time they commit to ensuring we maintain our high operating standards.

We often get asked what it entails being a trustee for RSPCA, so decided to catch up with Mark Heaton – our newest trustee, to find out how his first few months in the job have been!

Read Mark’s full interview below:

When did you join RSPCA Norwich as a trustee?

I was appointed in June this year (2024).

What made you want to become a trustee for RSPCA Norwich?

Since taking early retirement late last year I was keen to get involved, in a volunteering capacity, in 3 areas of particular interest to me. History – I  volunteer for the National Trust, Golf – I help out at my local golf club and Animals. Hence the RSPCA connection.

What areas of expertise do you bring to the organisation? and what impact do you hope to make?

I have 25 years of senior management experience in banking and finance as well as a Not for Profit organisation. My roles were primarily around Leadership, Business Development/Sales and Lending.

I hope to be a critical friend to Greg, the charity’s CEO, and the team and probably ask a number of stupid questions as I like detail and believe my corporate background experience will help ensure the governance of the organisation is sound.

What is the best thing about being a trustee for RSPCA Norwich?

In my first few months it has been great to meet many of the team and see the passion they have for the RSPCA and animal welfare. To be able to have some small part to play is very satisfying.

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a trustee, especially for an animal welfare charity?

I believe you should/must have an interest if not experience in the sector you choose. Be prepared to ask questions no matter how basic. Whilst ensuring governance of the charity has to be the first priority you should be prepared to get involved either by volunteering or attending events etc. Trustee meetings may only take place perhaps every other month but you need to ensure you prepare well for the meetings and perhaps volunteer for other sub committees.  I also intend spending some time at RSPCA Norwich’s HQ in Ashwellthorpe – getting to know people better and the issues you face. Time-wise you should expect to commit around 10 hours a month, if not more.

Do you have any pets of your own? and What's your favourite animal and why?

Until recently we had a German Short Haired Pointer which has unfortunately passed away. We are taking a break now but are likely to get another dog – probably a rescue. Unfortunately cats are out of the question as I am allergic to them!

My favourite animal, pet wise, has to be dogs. It just feels so good to have a faithful friend around, looking adoringly at you or maybe just wanting a food treat!Otherwise I find tigers fascinating and always have. Strong, agile and so good to look at.

What's an interesting fact or two that people might be surprised to find out about you?

I am a proud Yorkshireman!

I’m a sports fan in particular anything with a ball!

I also lived in Hong Kong with my family for 3 years and travelled extensively around Asia and Pacific for business and pleasure.
