Your support helps animals like to Jim to turn their life around
30 October 2024
Jim, the 3-year-old border collie, came into our care in October 2021. He had been having urinary issues and his previous owner sadly couldn’t afford his treatment or investigations as to what was causing them. They were also experiencing difficulties managing his behaviour in a small flat.
After many trips to the vet and plenty of welfare support from our team, we found that Jim unfortunately had deformed kidneys, bladder and ureter. He was a complex case and required lots of help from our amazing vets to get him stable enough to the point of rehoming, something we never thought we’d see due to the severity of his issues. Sadly, he will have the condition for the rest of his life and requires a specialist diet, along with regular blood and urine tests.
Thanks to the generous support of those who donate to RSPCA Norwich, shop with us and give in memory, we were able to pay for Jim’s veterinary care and investigations which ultimately saved this young pup’s life, as without it, his kidneys would have been further damaged and beyond repair.
We knew from then that Jim needed to find a home with an owner who not only was prepared to provide him with all of the love and care he deserved but was also experienced in looking after dogs with ongoing health conditions and who could manage the behaviour.
One of our Animal Welfare Officers at RSPCA Norwich, who has lots of experience with dogs similar to Jim (and a soft spot for collies in general!) fell in love with his playful energy, happy-go-lucky personality, and slightly clumsy ways. She officially adopted him and he now lives with a variety of other rescue pets who have similar issues, so he’s in safe hands and is officially RSPCA Norwich’s Head of Office Morale, a role he takes very seriously, and can often be heard squeaking his toys in the background of phone calls…whoops!
Jim is a testament to our thorough and passionate approach to animal welfare, proving how we work with our veterinary providers to try save as many animals as possible, even if the odds are stacked against them.
Sadly, not all animals have the same experience as Jim, and we are receiving more calls than ever from pet owners struggling to afford treatment for their sick and injured pets. It costs us £715 to care for a dog for 21 days, without taking into account any specialist veterinary care or operations they might need, like Jim did.
One way we’re asking supporters to help us is through using our free will writing service and consider leaving a gift in their will – so that your love for animals can live on, and dogs like Jim will have a kinder future for generations to come.
