Our Favourite Rescues of 2025: Charlie

16 December 2025

For our Animal Welfare Manager, Beth, Charlie was one of her favourite rescue stories for 2025.

Charlie is a very special cat who came into our care after a member of the public found him in a very bad state back in 2022. He was thin, dehydrated, and was terrified of people including the veterinary team so was initially resistant to being cared for.

Sadly, this isn’t unusual for animals with a history of neglect and as we had no idea what he’d already been through. He was placed into a foster home where they were able to give him the love and care he needed, and helped to build his trust with people again. After a few months he was slowly getting better and while he kept his distance, he started to chirrup when greeting people and asking for head rubs.

As he grew stronger and more confident, his lovely personality continued to come to light, learning more about the life of a domestic cat and enjoying being the centre of attention. Sadly he continued to struggle with some medical issues including some skin sensitivity and a heart condition.

In 2024, two years after being found, Charlie was finally ready to find his forever home but finding someone with the time and patience to care for him was proving difficult. He was a lovely cat but sadly we sometimes find that people don’t want to commit to adopting an animal that needs medication and is a little nervous.

Finally, in October 2025, Charlie met his new forever family who took him home and have been giving him the love and safety he deserves: ‘He is very affectionate and seems to be settling in well. his daily life consists mainly of sleeping and trying to sit on my laptop whilst I am working! He has even tried to help me decorate…’

Beth said: ‘We cannot thank enough the fosterers we have for our branch, that are able to help animals just like Charlie with a safe, loving space and to build their confidence when they have had a difficult time in their lives. Although Charlie spent a long time with us, he got to have the happy ending he deserves.’
